The Michelin Guide has consistently awarded more stars to Tokyo dining establishments than any other city in the world. I created this blog as my personal Tokyo restaurant guide, but I hope you will also enjoy reading it. If you have been to any of the same places feel free to leave some comments about your own experiences.

T'astous, Minami Azabu タストゥー 南麻布

T'astous is a new French restaurant near Sannohashi in Minami Azabu with a cool fitout and friendly, professional staff. The chef also knows his way around the kitchen.

They offer a relatively reasonably priced course menu of two entrees, a main and dessert or one entree and two mains as well as and a flight of 3, 4 or 5 'degustation' wines although, of course, you can order from the wine list if you would like.

Very enjoyable.

Cauliflower amuse

Sanma and caviar

Egg, bacon and lentil 'salad'

Venison and foie gras pie

Dazzle, Ginza レストランダズル 銀座

It would be fair to say I went through a distinct Dazzle phase about five years ago. I must have gone there about three of four times, for business and for pleasure. Then I stopped for some reason. Not sure why. Silly me. The establishment is well located in the heart of Ginza at the top of the distinctive Mikimoto Building, with really good food, relatively reasonable prices and a dose of glam.

This magnificent lunch was all of 8,000 yen for two people including two glasses of bubbly. Not bad going at all, in my opinion.

Shirokanetei Saryo, Shirokane 白金亭茶寮 白金

There is a rather smart Chinese restaurant in Shirokane's Platina Dori called Shirokanetei. You'll find it between the new Oslo Cafe and the new The Tender House towards the top of the street. Shirokanetei is not new and has evidently stood the test of time.

I haven't tried the somewhat upmarket dining room on the 2nd floor, but recently tried their all you can eat yum cha on the first floor. It has a slightly oddball feeling to it - like a breakfast bar in a small hotel and, although they're totally competent, the staff like to take things at their own pace. For 2,480 yen you can order all the dim sum you can eat from the menu (about 30 choices) and there is also a small buffet where you can have hot and sour soup, corn soup, fried noodles, mapo tofu and dessert.Tea and other drinks attract an additional charge.

Overall it's great value for money and the food is not bad. The most interesting thing I tried was the foie gras soup dumpling. Surprisingly good.

Rozzo Sicilia, Shirokane ロッツォシチリア白金

Rozzo Sicilia is a happening little Italian izakaya near Shinohashi in Shirokane. The menu comprises light dishes, with an emphasis on vegetables and fish - really a very healthy selection. The service is friendly and the food very good - make sure to book!

Eggplant caponata and fried bean bread (yum!)

Boiled eggs in herbed tomato sauce

Kabu and maguro salad

Very nice balanced Italian white - from Mount Etna!

Fish spaghetti

Sausage with peppers

The Tender House, Shirokanedai ザ テンダーハウス ダイニング白金台

I am so glad this place has opened up on Platina Dori in Shirokane. Platina Dori is already one of the toniest streets in Tokyo, but with so much potential to take it to the next level. Tender House Dining, on the first floor of a new function centre, is a beautifully designed 60s 'Mad Men' style grill that opens right onto the street. Great atmosphere and the food is pretty good.

I've been there for lunch and dinner. I think the lunch is where the value really shines but, of course, a place like this is made for cocktails and dinner. The staff are young and keen but you have to raise an eyebrow in an American style steakhouse when they don't know what a martini is.

But when the incompetence is charming and in a beautiful setting like this, how can we criticise? I'll certainly be back.

Ristorante Armani, Ginza ルマーニ 銀座 タワー リストランテ

There's really not much I couldn't like about Ristorante Armani in Ginza. Forget about the price. It's ARMANI and it's in GINZA. If you're after a bargain then Tokyo has plenty of other options for you.

This is a place where you can get dressed for lunch, have a bubbly or three, and then shop in the type of shops one really ought to be dressed for. Once in a while a bit of glitz is fun - and the food itself is very good, as is the service. Their staff are not stuffy at all and their attentiveness makes you feel just a little bit special.

Ristorante Yamazaki, Minami Aoyama リストランテ山崎南青山

Ristorante Yamazaki is on the second floor of a building not far from the big crematorium and cemetary at Aoyama (above the Ginza West cake store). But don't let that put you off - Aoyama cemetary is quite lovely, and a great place to view cherry blossoms in Spring.

Yamazaki is a very refined Italian restaurant with excellent food and very friendly service. On a recent visit (on a blistering hot summer's day) I sampled the 4,000 yen menu.

Gazpacho with shrimp, eggplant and stracciatella

And, stupidly I forgot to take a photo of the main dessert - a delicious mango and bitter chocolate creation...

Tarantella da luigi, Shirokane タランテッラ ダ ルイジ白金

Tarantella da luigi is a pizza joint that is pretty well hidden in the back-blocks of Shirokane. It has more than the usual dose of authenticity with a fit-out that would take you right back to Naples.

The food is delicious, and there's such a range of antipasto, pastas, risottos, primos and secondos that the pizza seems like an afterthought (in fact, I forgot to take a picture of my very adequate mushroom margherita). Very enjoyable place and great food. The prices are expensive though so don't budget for a cheap evening!

You can eat that little critter there on the mixed antipasto place  whole!

Summer truffles with pork ravioli (really good)
