The Michelin Guide has consistently awarded more stars to Tokyo dining establishments than any other city in the world. I created this blog as my personal Tokyo restaurant guide, but I hope you will also enjoy reading it. If you have been to any of the same places feel free to leave some comments about your own experiences.

Au gamin de Tokio, Shirokanedai オーギャマンド トキオ白金台

Au gamin de Tokio was recommended to me some time ago as a place to try an amazing truffle omelette. I had an impression, therefore, of a somewhat informal brunch place that also did dinner. The reality is a bit more glam than that - a cool, modern, open-kitchen eatery populated with young attractive staff and prosperous, sophisticated customers (with prices to match). It's more an 'up' destination than a place to chill; a place to see and be seen for the glitterati of Shirokane.

The food is cooked at an island in front of the tables in the layout you can see below. If you're really lucky, like me, you can have them doing the washing up right in front of you too. The quite large menu, which you can also see below propped up on an easel, is comprised of three lists - cold entrees, warm entrees and mains, as well as sides including french fries and lentils (bad luck if you can't read Japanese). The way of ordering is also somewhat complicated and took me a while to get my head around. They recommend half portions of each item but the menu only has the price for full portions. It would be better in my humble opinion to have a course menu.

The quality of the food is quite good, but I would have liked it if they went a bit easier on the vinegar in some of the dishes. The speciality of the house is the truffle omelette, which is probably worth making a special visit for! It's also a pretty good place to take foreign visitors to get the feeling of a contemporary Japanese/ international style eatery. Just take someone who speaks and understands Japanese as the menu and ordering is quite a process!

Marinated eggplant - too much vinegar IMO

Ham and mozzarella

Porcini and cheese salad

Scampi with mini cannellonis stuffed with prawn and scallop. The bearnaise style sauce was very tart (probably would be nice to go a bit easy on the vinegar)

The truffle omelette, which for me was the main event, is a must try

Confit of duck which was competent enough

Strawberry daifuku (nouvelle style!)

Raspberry millefeuille was very good

Plate, Nishi Azabu プレート西麻布

Plate is the successor to the always enjoyable Rendez Vous de Tokyo and still run by the ever-bubbly Ayano-san (that's her on the bottom right). The southern-French influenced food is excellent and she is more than solicitous with the wines, which left me with a headache the next morning but I'm far from complaining :-)

They have a dinner menu for 8,640 yen but it's a lot of courses, so you can subtract certain items for 1,000 yen each. It's a unique and interesting system if you're not hungry enough to go the whole hog. My meal is displayed below but, because I was concentrating on eating it, I forgot to take a photo of my lamb (which was very good).

This is an informal and rather fun establishment, yet deadly serious about their cooking. I highly recommend them and give 4 stars for the total experience.

Amuse of scampi

Pork cheek with truffle and orange (it is hidden under the leaves)

Tagliatelle with crab

I didn't partake of the cheese personally, but it looked GOOD

Forgot to take my NZ lamb loin! I'll have to go back again to get a pic ;-)

Date and pistaccio pound cake with pistaccio ice cream

La Sfoglina, Roppongi ラ スフォリーナ六本木

La Sfoglina is a relatively newly opened Italian restaurant where Cafe Daisy (RIP) used to be. They serve an amazing lunch there, which I've laid out pictorially below. Well worth a visit!

Pre-appetizer of an Italian flat bread with a slice of speck and a cream-style parmigiano

 Boiled egg with porcini

I think you can tell what this is

Burata salad

 Basil and pine nut pasta

 Fettuccine bolognaise

Mouth freshener of ice and herbs

And just look at the pannacotta - this was the best thing I ate!
